Leave GoDaddy Hosting: WordPress Migration or Website Builder Rebuild?
Move away from GoDaddy with the right product-specific plan. Separate WordPress migration from Website Builder rebuilding, and preserve domains, DNS and email.
The short answer
To leave GoDaddy hosting, first identify which GoDaddy product runs your site. WordPress and cPanel websites can have migration paths based on files, databases and provider tools. Websites + Marketing is a different platform: do not assume its site can be exported and restored as WordPress. Keep domain, DNS and email decisions separate from the hosting move.

On this page
Before you start
Identify your exact GoDaddy hosting product, registrar, DNS and email provider. Preserve source access and an independent backup before cancelling anything.
A high renewal invoice is a reason to compare options, not a reason to cancel the account holding your only working copy. Make the destination usable and recoverable before removing the source.
Identify the product, not just the login
One GoDaddy account can contain unrelated services. Open its product list and record what hosts the website, what registers the domain, where DNS is authoritative and where email is delivered.
Current product | Starting approach | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
Web Hosting with cPanel | Plan a compatible account or application migration | Confirm database, email and panel-restoration scope |
Managed Hosting for WordPress | Follow the product's documented WordPress migration path | Managed features may not exist at the new host |
Websites + Marketing | Plan an authorized content rebuild or supported data export | Do not promise a portable full-site WordPress backup |
Domain registration only | Keep or separately transfer the registration | Moving hosting does not require moving the registrar |
Separate business email | Plan independently from the website | Preserve mailbox access and mail-routing records |
These are product categories, not a complete inventory of every GoDaddy plan. Confirm the exact service shown in your account.
If your site is WordPress
GoDaddy publishes instructions for moving a managed WordPress site to an unmanaged WordPress account. Use the current product-specific method and make an independent backup first.
Check destination compatibility and identify provider-specific plugins, cache behavior, scheduled tasks and mail delivery. A successful files-and-database transfer does not prove that a managed feature has an equivalent at the new host.
For the copying options, see our WordPress migration guide. Keep the production URL unchanged where possible during the hosting move. Separate a domain rename or major redesign into a deliberately tested change.
If your site uses Websites + Marketing
GoDaddy's current Website Services Agreement describes its websites as integrated with its platform and restricts moving those platform-built websites to another hosting provider. That scope is different from exporting a WordPress site.
Plan a new implementation using content and assets you have the right to reuse. Check the current product's supported exports for individual datasets; do not assume a product CSV includes page design, bookings, memberships, order history or payment integration.
Inventory page URLs, text, owned media, forms, search metadata and business functions. Recreate and test the required behavior at the destination. If a URL must change, build an appropriate redirect map. Do not copy licensed platform software or assume that all bundled media is reusable elsewhere.
Get a clear rebuild scope before buying hosting for the replacement. A migration offer for WordPress may not include rebuilding a proprietary website builder.
Preserve email and DNS
Record your current DNS zone before making changes. Include A, AAAA, MX, TXT, CNAME and verification records as relevant. A nameserver switch can affect all these services, while changing a website's origin records can be narrower.
Find out whether mail is part of the hosting you intend to cancel or a separate product. Test sending and receiving at the destination and preserve required authentication records. A website backup does not necessarily contain mailbox messages.
For background, read connecting a domain to hosting and our business-email checks.
Compare the real cost of the alternative
Record the current hosting renewal, the alternative's upfront term and later renewal, required extras, migration or rebuild work and operator time. Confirm tax and currency. A cheaper first-year banner is not enough to justify the move.
If renewal is the main problem, first audit the invoice using our renewal-increase checklist. An expired promotion, a changed term and an unwanted extra service require different decisions.
Hostlelo publishes this guide and is one possible destination to evaluate, not an independently ranked "best GoDaddy alternative". No performance comparison, account quote or savings guarantee was tested here.
Cut over only after the destination passes
Use a protected preview or hostname override to test important pages and customer tasks. For an active shop or booking system, plan the final data sync and control new writes so you do not split records between two systems.
Follow a documented migration cutover plan: backup, private test, final sync, routing change, observation and reconciliation. Google's hosting-change guidance is relevant when the public URLs stay the same.
Keep source access for the observation period your system needs. Then cancel only the replaced service after confirming no remaining domain, mailbox, backup or application dependency relies on it. A ticket asking about migration is not itself a cancellation or an extension of the renewal deadline.
Reader questions
Can I keep my domain at GoDaddy and host elsewhere?
Yes, registration and hosting can be separate. You can change the relevant DNS records while leaving registration where it is, subject to your account's controls.
Can a WordPress migration plugin move Websites + Marketing?
Do not assume so. It is a different platform, not an ordinary WordPress installation. Check permitted content exports and plan a rebuild where necessary.
Should I cancel GoDaddy before the migration finishes?
Keep the source available until the destination, data, DNS and email have been verified and dependencies reconciled. Cancel the specific replaced product only after that review.
